I thought it was time for another Johno update, a bit like the government, but with a lot more style! We are of course still locked down like everyone else, but in the background we are doing some positive stuff, which I thought I’d tell you about.
As can be seen on the approach to the club, the housing developments continue around us and we have a team trying to make sure that the clubhouse and grounds are protected for the long term future. They are Gary Santry our club Hon. Secretary, Dusty Hare, Treasurer, and Derek Lockett, Vice President with extra support from Andy Cook Vice Chairman and myself. We have recently written to our MP, John Baron and the Council Leader Gavin Callaghan to get their help and will shortly be putting out a survey-petition for you all to complete in order to help our cause. When it appears, please share it with everyone you know so we get as much publicity as possible.
On the Community Rugby side, we are talking with Saracens to get some project work in Basildon with both local schools and the club – hopefully making some opportunities for year 9&10 players. Dusty is in discussions with the Saracens Community Project leader for our area, and will let people know as the lockdown eases.
We ran a 1st Aid course recently too which has brought us up to date and ready for when we restart. Trevor Emery has agreed to help keep us on track by becoming our 1st Aid Coordinator. Our newly qualified people are Trevor Emery, Cherie Wright, Donna Smith, TJ Leagas, Joan Bothma, Adelle Edwards, Kelly King, Angie Chew, Billy Chaplin, Dusty Hare, JJ Bone and Isabella Bone.
Cookie has been working on RFU Audits and Safeguarding stuff for us, which is boring, but essential to us keeping our RFU Accreditation and Clubmark Status. We all owe him a special vote of thanks for doing this for us, so we don’t have to!
All in all we are doing our best to be ready to hit the ground running when the lockdown starts to be released and we will be ready to ‘party’ as soon as we are allowed. In the meantime stay safe and well, and I look forward to seeing you in the not too distant future.
Paul (Johno) Johnson, Club Chairman
