Home win for the U16's

A bright & sunny morning saw the Academy U16’s welcome Harlow to the Onion Bowl for their final game of 2018.
Tom J got the game underway & with ball cleanly secured, Harlow set about making ground. The ball was shipped inside & with the Basildon line up fast Harlow were under early pressure. A thunderous first tackle from Taylor P & sharp work at the breakdown resulted in a penalty awarded to Basildon & a quick tap by Matt F saw the ball through the hands & out to Finley R-C who scored the first try of the game in the corner. Conversion missed, 5-0 to Basildon.
Harlow restarted with a deep kick to the Basildon 22m line & a good catch & off-load by Travis S saw the ball moved quickly & up towards half way. A cheeky chip & chase from Georgie A had Basildon on the attack again, & quick ball & good handling released Tayla C out wide on the left and he powered over the line for the try. Conversion missed again & Basildon lead 10-0.
The game restarted with a miskick from Harlow that just made it over the 10m line but an excellent pick up off the ground by Taylor P saw him run hard & exploit the space to score the games 3rd try. Unfortunately the conversion attempt was again unsuccessful & with just 8 minutes gone, Basildon were leading 15-0.
Following strong words from their coaches, Harlow got the game underway again & with a good chase were now putting Basildon under pressure. A fumble from Basildon saw Harlow awarded a penalty around half way but unfortunately the chance to threaten was wasted as the kick sailed beyond the dead ball line.
Harlow were now growing into the game & starting to make gains, and this resulted in Basildon conceding consecutive penalties. With the ball safely into touch around 7m from the Basildon line, Harlow sensed an opportunity but strong defending at the lineout saw the ball turned over & Basildon attempt to run the ball clear. Once again the handling was loose & the ball was knocked-on & following the resulting scrum, Harlow were awarded another penalty. Opting to tap & run, the visitors looked dangerous but excellent work from Alfie S & Omar A saw the ball turned over. Strong carrying from first Finley R-C & then Georgie A saw play moved up to the Harlow 22 but again the chance was wasted as the ball was knocked on.
From the resulting scrum the Basildon line was up fast & excellent pressure saw the ball turned over & then moved quickly through the hands, and with the attack now just 5m from the line Harlow were penalised in the 22nd minute for not rolling away. A quick tap & an attempt to rumble the ball over were followed by slick, fast passing out to Finley R-C who went over in the corner for his 2nd try of the game. Conversion missed & 20-0 to Basildon.
From the Harlow restart the ball was safely gathered in & passed to Tom J & spotting space behind the defensive line, Tom kicked cleverly to gain territory. With the Basildon chase good Harlow knocked on & following the resulting scrum, a long pass found Tom J running a superb line & with excellent footwork, sliced his way through the defence to score under the posts. A successful conversion from Travis S (finally!!) and Basildon lead 27-0.
Another restart ball secured & strong carrying from Kyan T & Ollie R moved the play into the Harlow half. Quick ball from the ruck for Matt F & good handling along the line see’s the ball with Tayla C who steps inside, draws the cover across & off-loads to the supporting Tom J who goes over for his second try. Conversion missed and the half ends with Basildon leading 32-0.
And so the visitors kick to start the 2nd half & Basildon immediately look to pick up where they left off. With the ball safely caught & moved quickly through the hands, Rhys K carried hard to take play up to the Harlow 22. Ball secured, it is then switched back the other way to Tayla C who unfortunately knocks-on. Scrum ball secured by Harlow but the home team swarm all over them & steal the ball, quickly shifting it to Mitch H. A strong carry is halted by a good Harlow tackle but the tackler doesn’t roll away so penalty to Basildon. Another quick tap & the ball is passed to Georgie A running hard, only one result…… try time! The kicking nightmare continued for Travis S so 37-0 to Basildon.
From the restart Tyrese gathered well & carried hard up to half way but Harlow again infringe at the breakdown. Touch found but Basildon knock-on & following the scrum, Harlow do the same! Another scrum & incredibly another knock-on by the home team but this time with the advantage to Harlow, they decide to kick! Play continues and Georgie A carried strongly again, off-loaded & the ball went quickly through the hands to George F who scored under the posts in the 50th minute. Conversion is kicked by Georgie A, score now 44-0 to Basildon.
Harlow restarted again and there followed a period with neither side on top. Basildon’s discipline slipped slightly & they conceded a penalty. Touch found & the home side were penalised again from the resulting lineout. Once again Harlow found touch around Basildon’s 22 but this time the ball was turned-over at the lineout & played back to Travis S who cleared with a kick deep into the Harlow half. A superb chase by Sean O led to the home side retrieving possession & supported by Georgie A, the ball found its way to Tayla C who charged through to score again. The conversion was missed and the final whistle blew without further scoring.
Final Score: Basildon 49 Harlow 0
