U16's continue winning run
By Rich Einchcomb
Another win on the road!
Just a few lines about the Academy U16’s latest fixture, a visit to our friends nearby at Billericay RFC.
With the temperature dropping again & the wind getting up, the game got underway with Billericay opting to play up the hill in the first half.
Immediately on the front foot, it wasn’t long before Basildon were moving the ball & threatening the hosts try line. Several phases later & despite strong defending, Georgie A crashed over for the games first try in the 2nd min. Conversion missed, 5-0 to the visitors.
With the game restarted, Billericay attempted to make inroads into the visitors 22 but were met with a well organised defence & with an accurate exit kick from Tom J, play was moved back to the Billericay red zone. Strong recycling & quick ball results in Matt F crossing for the try. An excellent conversion from Travis S & Basildon lead 12-0.
The remainder of the half consisted of Basildon working hard & going through the phases & Billericay gamely trying to force a way into the game. Despite mostly well organised defence & strong tackling by the home side, Basildon went on to score further tries through George F (converted by Travis S), Aiden LP (converted by Tom J) & Taylor P, and the half finished with Basildon leading 31-0.
The 2nd half started with the home team now playing down the slope and encouraged by decent spells in the 1st half, began to play with some belief. The much improved performance from Billericay saw play broken up regularly & the visitors seemed to be struggling to create opportunities. Good home defensive organisation & solid work at the tackle & breakdown meant that it was 20 mins into the 2nd half before Basildon managed to create & score a 6th try through Frank W. Converted again by Travis S & the score was now 38-0.
The even nature of the half continued. The Billericay boys really stepped up & continued fighting for an opportunity to score. The home scrum was solid throughout & some of the tackling & breakdown work was very good. Basildon continued to try & get their passing game going properly & this eventually paid off in the 65th min, when Tom J broke strongly to score what would turn out to be the last try of the game. Another superb conversion from Travis S took the score to 45-0 to Basildon & that turned out to be the final score.
Thanks to Billericay RFC. A very useful run-out, with playing time for the whole squad against tough & determined opposition who regardless of the score, never stopped trying.
Up next…… Essex Cup semi-final at home against Chelmsford on 10th Feb.
