Welcome to the new season and welcome to our new members, players, families and supporters as well as all our ‘old faithful’ and long-standing members and friends.
When I took this job on, all I wanted was to help get the ‘Basildon atmosphere’ and sense of fun back into the clubhouse, and I’m glad to say that up to now, people have really responded.
As examples of this we had the Nat West Taskforce day where volunteers did loads of repairs and tidying up around the clubhouse, we have a new coaching team for our seniors and Academy, we have new coaches and volunteers in our Youth and Mini rugby sections, and new Committee members all taking up the strain! I should also like to thank our outgoing Chairman, Andy White and Vice-Chair Keith Hill for their many years of service to the club.
For the record, the new Committee is now:-
Myself, Paul (Johno) Johnson Chairman
Andy (Cookie) Cook Vice-Chairman
Gary Santry Hon. Secretary
David (Dusty) Hare Treasurer
Gavin Kirkum Youth Chair
Chris Knight Membership Sec.
Ian Stewart Players Rep
Robin Groves Facilities Manager
And of course, the ever-green Mr David (Ron) Barnes, who is our esteemed President.
We know we have a testing season in front of us as we rebuild our senior playing section, but we also have some exciting young sides to watch on Sundays for those who can get up that early! There will be some U18 players that make the transition from juniors to seniors this year, including those that are off at Uni, who can come back and play during their home visits. Adding youth and enthusiasm to the experienced players we still have will be a pleasure to see, and the squad are already proving themselves with two wins in the first two warm-up games.
Our new sponsors, Paul Robinson are on-board for another year as well as Gary Brand of A&B Taxis and Derek Lockett who are kind enough to continue their support for us. In the background we also have our VP’s and friends of many years who have contributed greatly with time, money and a cuddle when needed.
I’d also like to publicly praise our Bar Team of Adelle, Kelly and the girls, who have done a great job of keeping the club going with party bookings during the quiet part of the year. Consequently we’re in pretty good shape with cash-flow for this time of year.
On the whole, I’m excited and eager to see what challenges the season brings, and how well we meet them. But I promise that I and my committee colleagues will do our best to make this season enjoyable. If we succeed as well on the pitch as we have off the pitch with our new sense of purpose and friendship, we’ll have a very good season indeed!
