It was the second annual Basildon Rugby Academy Lunch yesterday which turned out to be a fantastic day that almost never went ahead! Our guest speaker for the day, Mr Graham Price, legendary member of the great Wales and British Lions sides of the 1970’s was stranded at the Membury services on the M4 when his car broke down, still 115miles away! After Graham contacted him, Gary Brand, one of our longest standing sponsors jumped into action and organised (and paid for) a taxi to pick Graham up and get him to the club. Gary also organised Graham’s return trip too. A massive thanks to you mate from everyone at the club!
In due course Graham arrived and the lunch got underway. We were entertained by our own MC for the day, Eifion Hughes, who proceeded to steal Graham’s thunder by telling stories he remembered from watching Graham play, listening to Max Boyce recordings and research into the exploits of the world famous ‘Pontypool Front Row’. Graham took it all in good heart and entertained us with reminiscences of games played, people met and the various ‘goings on’ in his travels on tour. With quiet spoken authority and great dignity Graham took time to greet everyone who approached him and fulfilled the many requests for photos and selfies. He charmed even the non-welsh in the audience with his easy going nature and we cannot recommend him highly enough to anyone looking for a guest speaker!
We would like to thank all those who contributed by their sponsorship, or organizing or supporting the club to create this event, (including Joan Bothma who took many of the photos you will see on Social media). Through everyone’s contributions and efforts we expect to have raised over £5,000 once all the bills are paid, towards the Academy and it’s associated Youth teams. Thanks to all those contributed, all those that came along and all who made it happen!
